Building Internal Capacity and Advancing Scholarship in AI at CETE

As part of our ongoing commitment to innovation and responsible technology use, CETE has launched an internal initiative to train the members of the CETE community in the safe, ethical, and effective use of generative AI. This initiative focuses on equipping members of the CETE community with tools and strategies to thoughtfully integrate AI into their daily work as a way of boosting productivity while remaining critical of the technology’s limitations and potential risks.

Generative AI has the potential to support many aspects of the work we do at CETE, from drafting content and synthesizing research to creating visuals and exploring ideas. However, with this potential comes a responsibility to use these tools thoughtfully. Our internal training series promotes both exploration and caution, encouraging CETE members to become power users of generative AI who also critically reflect on its shortcomings, such as issues of bias, data privacy, and misinformation.

Training Series

Our series of 1-hour virtual workshops (known internally as CETELearn) has been designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities in a supportive environment for any member of the CETE community interested in learning about generative AI. Sessions are facilitated by CETE staff who are experienced in applying AI tools to their own work.

  • Session 1: Text-Based Tools (e.g., ChatGPT)
This session introduces the basics of using AI tools for text generation, editing, summarizing, and idea development. Participants explore use cases relevant to education, workforce development, and project support. A free eBook was created to support this training session:

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Learning & Development: Understanding ChatGPT – A Quick Reference.

  • Session 2: AI in Visual Design
This session explores how image-generating tools like DALL·E and Adobe Firefly can be used to support graphic design, illustration, and branding efforts at CETE. The focus is on ideation, prototyping, and content creation while acknowledging ethical considerations such as copyright and representation.

CETE is also actively engaged in critical reflection on the use of generative AI tools. An example is the story published that explores how generative AI is shaping our work across the center:

We will continue providing generative AI training to enhance skills development among program teams and create opportunities that combine practical learning with meaningful engagement. As the landscape changes, our aim is to cultivate a center-wide culture of curiosity and collaboration when working with new technologies.
