DACUM (Developing a Curriculum) Program Highlights

This video provides an overview of the DACUM process.

Who We Are

DACUM (an acronym for Developing a Curriculum) is an effective and relatively low-cost method of analyzing jobs and occupations used worldwide for more than 40 years and in over 58 countries. This unique process offers components that successfully support job and occupational analysis for organizations, including community colleges, companies, government agencies and professional organizations.

The DACUM International Training Center brings over 25 years of experience conducting DACUM workshops and institutes in person to now doing them virtually through our DACUM Virtual Institute, providing both synchronous and asynchronous online sessions over 11 weeks.

What We Do

Some of the DACUM uses include:

  • Developing and updating competency-based curricula and training programs
  • Preparing certifications/licensing for professions
  • Creating performance assessments/testing
  • Providing career advising and counseling
  • Creating HR/organization development tools such as job descriptions, job-specific performance appraisals, and standard operating procedures

DACUM’s process involves panel of expert workers and a skilled facilitator working together to precisely identify the duties and tasks performed in a job or occupation. The panel of experts collectively and cooperatively describe the job or occupational tasks in the language that those within their industry can understand and embrace. The duties and tasks (sometimes called competencies) become the foundation of competency-based training programs by identifying what must be taught to the worker or student.

Besides analyzing a job or occupation, DACUM can also be used to analyze a process, specific functions that cut across multiple jobs, and even jobs that are just emerging and may be somewhat conceptual starting out. It is a versatile process which can be adapted to meet numerous organizational needs.

DACUM facilitators John Moser and Kate Fergus facilitate a DACUM Virtual Institute with Subject Matter Experts.

Our Commitment to Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The DACUM project team recognizes that with diversity comes strength. To that end, the DACUM project team has taken steps to engage in practices that foster inclusivity and representation in our training activities, job analysis work, and relationships with clients and stakeholders.

All DACUM project members are actively participating in the Getting REDI curriculum, the Critical Allies Groups, and making progress towards the goals identified in their REDI Individual Learning Plan.

Representation matters and the DACUM Virtual Institute development team was highly mindful of this fact; creating content using inclusive language, imagery, and scenarios that are representative of not only the diverse community of DACUM participants (both at home and internationally) but the multifaced make-up of the American population as well.

Moving forward, DACUM hopes to further incorporate the lessons learned through the REDI journey by identifying strategies for the recruitment of diverse panels of subject matter experts and providing guidance to DACUM clients on best-practices for bringing a diverse representation of expert workers to the table.
