Evaluation of Ohio’s Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home-visiting Prenatal Curriculum: Project Update

The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act includes the authorization of Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) programs with significantly increased national investment over five years for at-risk pregnant women and children (Adirim, 2013; Issel, 2011; Michalopoulos et al., 2013; Willis, 2013). The goal of this expansion is to improve the long-term health and well-being of mothers and children by providing home-visiting programs that address prenatal care, healthcare for infants and young children, parenting, other precursors to lifelong health, and educational outcomes (Willis, 2013). The CETE Results Management Team’s evaluation of Ohio’s MIECHV prenatal curriculum will employ an experimental design to test the relationship of the online prenatal health curriculum to several home visitor variables.

Standards in the classroom

The Ohio Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) Professional Development Network (PDN) is a collaboration of content experts, trainers, and researchers working to deliver and support evidence-based, high quality, effective in‐service professional development in areas of importance to nearly 1,000 Ohio ABLE professionals, including administrators, support staff, and teachers.

Curriculum development for Automated Materials Joining Technology (AMJT)

CETE, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), is working to develop curriculum for students in the evolving and emerging career field of Automated Materials Joining Technology (AMJT). The inquiry-based curriculum will allow students to work through four courses by completing projects intended for both individual and group work. The courses to be written and completed by June 2015 cover instruction on robotics, welding, and material inspection, among other things.

Project update on the Physicians Leadership Academy evaluation

The Results Management Team at CETE continues its collaboration with the Columbus Medical Association to evaluate the first year of the Physicians Leadership Academy (PLA). This is an innovative program designed to enhance the ability of physicians to serve as change agents within their spheres of influence in the healthcare system.

CETE evaluates OhioMeansJobs (OMJ)

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) operates 77 separate workforce programs spread across 13 different government agencies, which results in a maze of competing priorities and agency missions. Customers must navigate a web of federal and state programs that lack standardized processes and consistency of services. This cumbersome bureaucracy is extremely inefficient; it duplicates efforts, wastes resources, and confuses customers.

Consortium Update: 2014 mNET Summer Training

Mobilizing National Educator Talent (mNET) is a consortium of P-12 schools, universities, state department of educations, and nonprofit organizations that supports nontraditional pathways for individuals seeking to become teachers in urban and rural school districts. Adults preparing to attain full state teacher certification participate in web-based and mobile-friendly curricula and electronic coaching (ecoaching).

Early Head Start grant aids babies and toddlers

CETE in conjunction with The Ohio State University’s Schoenbaum Family Center, College of Education and Human Ecology, and Wexner Medical Center will play a vital role in a new $16.5-million project to ensure children between 6 weeks and 3 years old in Columbus, Ohio, have a happy and healthy start in life. One of only two university-led collaborations in the country, the five-year Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership will focus on the education and welfare of the approximately 2,500 infants and 2,300 toddlers living in targeted neighborhoods where the child poverty rate is above the norm.

CETE adds competency modeling to its practice analysis suite

Organizations are continually searching for better ways to define and achieve excellence. Defining required performance (sometimes called “practice analysis”) is the basis for many important organizational activities, including training, performance appraisal, curriculum development, and certification. The focus on excellence in organizations is important because the ability of workers to perform is a competitive advantage.

Quality Matters matters to CETE

Quality Matters (QM) is a nationally recognized peer-review process designed to attest to the value of online courses. CETE staff received training on the QM rubric to better guide the transition of our current project work to an online format.

CETE’s implementation of the global standard for project management

CETE is an organization with extensive project management experience. Each year, the center manages dozens of projects in the areas of education, workforce, and community development. There has been a growing interest among staff to expand this expertise by implementing formal project management tools and processes that are aligned to the Project Management Institute’s (PMI’s) global standard for project management. Over the past year, CETE staff members interested in formal project management methodology have met and piloted several tools from PMI's A Project Manager's Book of Forms.

Using logic models as planning and evaluation tools

Experience suggests that logic models are used increasingly in evaluation and program development. Logic models provide professionals a tool for program planning and evaluation purposes. Logic model development services are available at CETE.

The 2014 GED®: A new era in high-school equivalency assessment

In January 2014, a new and highly anticipated GED® assessment was launched. This version of the test, which had previously been the only high-school equivalency assessment available to students, represents a massive shift in not only the content and delivery of the test but also its overall purpose. With a new focus on the Common Core State Standards and College and Career Readiness standards as well as an emphasis on task and text complexity, higher-order thinking skills, and technology skills, the GED® has morphed into a gateway for those seeking to enter postsecondary or workplace training programs.
